Ringworm in lactating sows

چکیده

A 100-sow farrow-to-feeder farm with an outdoor gestation lot had a 4-year history of ring-like skin lesions in lactating sows. On average, 90% of sows in each 5-week batch developed lesions within a week of entering the farrowing house. Lesions beginning as 2to 3-cm circles of dark, crusty skin coalesced into larger areas on the back, sides, and ventral abdomen. No etiologic agent was identified in hair shafts and skin biopsies in initial samples. A second sampling revealed diffuse fungal elements in exfoliated epidermis. The tentative diagnosis was ringworm. Control strategies were limited by cost and labor constraints defined by the producer. Goals agreed upon included reducing the number of organisms in the farrowing house and the number that entered the farrowing house on the sows, and limiting recontamination of the environment by aggressively treating lesions. Sows were thoroughly washed before entering the farrowing house. Washing and disinfecting protocols used in the farrowing house and topical treatment of lesions were improved. Prevalence of lesions in the next farrowing group was 30%, and in subsequent groups remained < 10%. The average number of lesions per sow decreased from > 20 to < 5, and lesions were much smaller.

Genes involved in carnitine synthesis and carnitine uptake are up-regulated in the liver of sows during lactation

BACKGROUND Convincing evidence exist that carnitine synthesis and uptake of carnitine into cells is regulated by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARA), a transcription factor which is physiologically activated during fasting or energy deprivation. Sows are typically in a negative energy balance during peak lactation. We investigated the hypothesis that genes involved in carnitine...

Efficacy of Optiphos phytase on mineral digestibility in diets for breeding sows: effect during pregnancy and lactation

Phosphorus in most diets for breeding sows is digested for 20 to 40%, thus leading to a relatively high amount of P in the manure. To enhance the P digestibility in diets for both lactating and gestating sows, two separate experiments were carried out to study the efficacy of Optiphos TM phytase derived from E. coli and produced by the yeast Pichia pastoris. Thirty crossbred gestating sows and ...

Standardized ileal protein and amino acid digestibility by growing pigs and sows.

Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of the physiological condition of swine on standardized ileal digestibility coefficients (SID). The apparent ileal digestibility coefficients were determined for crude protein and amino acids in six feed ingredients (corn, barley, wheat, soybean meal, canola meal, and meat and bone meal) in growing pigs and in gestating and lactating sows. Grow...

Ideal amino acid balance for sows during gestation and lactation.

Improving efficiency of protein utilization is important for pregnant sows under restricted feed allowance and for lactating sows with limited feed intake. Sows have limited ability to support the growth of fetuses and mammary glands during late gestation and to support mammary growth and milk production, especially during first lactation period. A series of studies was conducted to characteriz...

Behavior and performance of lactating sows and piglets reared indoors or outdoors1

Two hundred eighty-seven lactating Newsham sows and their litters were used to determine the effects of intensive indoor (n = 147) and intensive outdoor (n = 140) production systems on sow and litter productivity and behavior. All sows were of contemporary age and fed a completely balanced sorghum-based diet. Behavior data were collected by live observation on 40 sows and litters (20 indoor and...
